Madalena municipality located along the west coast of the island of Pico. The total area of ​​the municipality - 147, 1 square meter, the population of just over 6000 people. The eastern part of the municipality comes to acting stratovolcano Pico and the narrow strait, which is often referred to as a channel Fayala. Madalena municipality was created in 1723. In the XV-XVI centuries the cultivation of grapes was the main activity, not only in this municipality, but also on the whole island. By the first quarter of XVIII century Madalena has strengthened its position in the wine circles. In 1793 and the years 1800-1802 the share of the domestic market in the municipality of wine sales accounted for 80% of the share of sales of the island of Pico. It was decided to build a port in Madalena to redistribute cargo flows. In the twentieth century began to actively develop the tourism industry - ecotourism.
