Sebastian La Mansion is one of the three houses belonging to well-known Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (1904-1973). This house is located on Cerro Florida in Valparaiso, attracted by its unusual architecture and magnificent views of the bay views from its windows. Like the other two houses of the great poet, La Chascona in Santiago and Cassa de Isla Negra, it is a museum at the Pablo Neruda Foundation.
This house was designed and began to build a Spanish builder Sebastian Collado, intending to spend there the last years of his life. However, construction was interrupted due to his sudden death. After his death the unfinished building was inherited by a family who did not know what to do with it. In 1959 the house was sold by Pablo Neruda.
The original four-storey building design was slightly modified, added to the attic. Famous artists Francisco Velasco and Maria Martner completed murals of this building as a map of Patagonia. From the windows of the house offers a magnificent view of the bay and the coast.
In the small museum a lot of interesting artifacts and photos related to Pablo Neruda: cookware sets with balloons, all kinds of charts, antique stained glass, stuffed birds, imported from Venezuela, a great Italian dinner service that was used for dinners, paintings. The walls are painted in pink, blue, yellow, green, purple color. A large dormer windows give views of the structure of the ship, which miraculously ended up on the shore.
Inauguration of the house in 1961 coincided with the celebration of Independence Day of Chile. After the completion of the poet spent in this house for a year, and the last year of his life. Every day spent in this house Pablo Neruda did for himself special.
After the poet's death in 1973, during the military dictatorship, the house was abandoned. In 1991, it was decided to renovate the building. One year later, it opened its doors to the public as a house museum of the great Chilean poet Pablo Neruda. In 2012, the house made the list of National Monuments of Chile.
