Basilica of Sant Abbondio - one of the most interesting churches in the Italian town of Como, standing on the shores of the lake in Lombardy.

The current building of the basilica built on the site of a pre-existing Christian church of the 5th century, dedicated to Saints Peter and Paul and was built by the order of the first bishop of Como St. Amant. Built about a kilometer from the city walls, the Basilica was designed to store some relics that belonged to two main saints of the Christian world, and who Amantea once brought from Rome.

Up until 1007 he served as the Chair of St. Abbondio the Bishop of Como, which in 1013 the bishop Alberic moved to the territory of the city. At the same basilica it was handed over to the Benedictine order, which between 1050 and 1095 years, it was rebuilt in the Romanesque style. The new church building was dedicated successor Amantea - Avundiyu saint, after whom it was named. In 1095 the basilica, which had a central nave and four aisles, was consecrated by Pope Urban II.

The remains of an early Christian church, discovered in 1863 during restoration work can be seen today - they are marked with a black and gray marble. Besides the basilica is notable for two bell towers, towering at the end of the outer aisles. The modest facade, which once decorated cloister, has seven windows and the portal. Special attention is given exterior trim windows choirs. Also worth seeing Roman bas-reliefs and a cycle of frescoes mid-14th century, located in the apse. Under the main altar of the Basilica of the relics of St. Avundiya.

The building of a medieval monastery attached to the church and recently renovated, it is planned to give the faculty of law at the local university.
