City Byhov formed on the high right bank of the Dnieper in the XIV century as the private ownership of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Svidrigaylo. Stone fortress city built in 1610 by the renowned military leader Jan Karol Chodkiewicz. Permission to build a fortress Chodkiewicz received from the king after a sudden attack of the Cossack troops.

Construction of a new fortified castle was completed in 1619. In 1628 the castle passed to Bykhovsky Princes Sapieha, who rebuilt it to your liking. In place of the military barracks came a more elegant style of the Baroque style, typical of the Renaissance. The castle appeared arcade gallery.

However, the proximity to the Cossack Ukraine did not allow the owners of the castle to relax. He continued to build fortifications. The castle was surrounded by ramparts and is surrounded on all sides by deep moats. Along the perimeter of the impregnable walls were built watchtowers from which day and night watchmen were followed.

Bykhov, like most cities in the Commonwealth, it was a multi-religious city. In it, in particular, was a synagogue, was built as a defensive structure is also capable of withstanding answered by a serious siege.

The Northern War Sapieha helped Sweden, for which he won the Russian troops destroyed the castle, but soon he was again rebuilt. In 1830, after the failure of the November Uprising, the property was confiscated by the rebels in the state. This fate befell Bykhovsky castle. After a while he existed as a barracks, and with the beginning of the XX century has been completely abandoned and empty for more than a century.

Last year, the Government of the Republic of Belarus adopted a long-awaited decision - to allocate money to restore the castle Bykhov. Soon, tourists can see the majestic fortress in all its glory.
