Cathedral of St. James was built in the Baroque style in the years 1717-1724 by the architect Johann Jakob Gerkomera on the former site of a Gothic cathedral. The building was badly damaged during the Second World War, but was restored and rebuilt in the 50-ies.

The baroque interior of the cathedral was created by famous artists - brothers Azam. On the vault depict scenes from the life of St. Jacob. The main attraction of the church - the picture "Virgin Mary - Assistant" by Lucas Cranach the Elder.

In the north aisle is the tomb of Archduke Maximilian III. His magnificent tombstone is considered a masterpiece of bronze casting of the late German Renaissance.

In 1993, the cathedral was reopened to the public after two years of restoration.
