Sevan Monastery, located about 6 km from the town of Sevan, Sevan peninsula - one of the religious sites in the region.

In the VIII Art. several monks settled on the island, began to build his church. Soon they were joined by other monks who started the active construction of the monastery. First of all the monks began to build a wall, for they were cut down in a rock ledge and a great laid on it by huge stone blocks. As a result, the wall girded island of Sevan. Later, over the wall of the monks built a watchtower with small gates and built three churches, cells and several outbuildings.

Temples Surb Astvatsatsin and Surb Arakelots temple was built in 874, the initiator of the construction was the daughter of King Ashot I - Mariam.

In 925 near the island there was a terrible battle with the Arab Army - Battle of Sevan. Then the king Ashot II Iron is completely defeated the Arabs and since then began the Armenian "Golden Age". Throughout its history, the monastery was destroyed several times. In Soviet times it was closed. In 1931, a terrible wrong: the temple of Surb Astvatsatsin was demolished in the rocks from which the resort was built soon.

In 1981 began the construction of water diversion tunnel, causing the water level in the lake has fallen almost 20 meters, and the island became a peninsula.

Church Surb Astvatsatsin and Surb Arakelots preserved until today. From the church Surb Harutyun was only a foundation. Preserved temples, the largest of which - the temple of Surb Arakelots, built of dark volcanic stone. The construction of temples is quite unusual. They are small trehapsidny cross-domed church. Among themselves temples differ only in the nature of the masonry.

Sevan Monastery, unlike other monasteries - a small and modest. At the same time the main highlight of the monastery are amazing views of the lake and the surrounding area, which open from its windows.
