Church of St. Julian is considered the parish church of the city of Setubal. The original church building was built in the second half of the XIII century. Money for the construction of the church were donated by fishermen of the city.

It is known that at the end of the XV century the church was attached to the palace Jorge de Lankastra, spiritual master Knights of Santiago and the Duke of Aveiro. He used the church as a private chapel until 1510. Between 1513 and 1520 the medieval church was rebuilt on the orders of King Manuel I. The money for the upgrade of the building have been isolated from the royal treasury. So the money donated Jorge de Lankastr and local parishioners.

The architectural style of the building - Manueline, as evidenced by the main and lateral portals of the church that we see today. They are the only members of the church in this style, preserved to our days. In 1531 in Setubal it was a strong earthquake, in which the church was destroyed. After the restoration of the architecture of the church was the predominant style of Mannerism. Inauguration of the renovated church took place in 1570.

The church was rebuilt again after the Lisbon earthquake, which severely damaged the building. The temple was restored, the facade, the interior wooden floor ceiling, painted tiles, the main and side altars, the main chapel was made in the late baroque style. The Manueline style remained the main and side portal of the church. The church has one nave and three aisles. The side walls are decorated with tiles "azulezush" XVIII century, which depict scenes from the life of St. Julian Anazavrskogo and his wife.
