Military camp Karosta is a suburb in the north of Liepaja, which occupies about 1/3 of its total area and is a historical landmark. Karosta emerged in the late XIX century.

The road to the military camp runs through 2 bridges. The first bridge spans the canal that connects the nearby lake Liepaja and the Baltic Sea. A second bridge passes through Karostsky channel that cuts several kilometers into the land. Once in the interior of the channel there were docks of the Baltic Fleet of the Soviet Union, but the way here was commissioned by a large number of citizens.

Liepaja has become a major trading settlement during the First Baltic Crusades for the reason that it does not freeze in winter bay. In the XIX century the city became the foundation base of the Baltic Navy of the Russian state. Proximity to Prussia was one of the most important circumstances predetermined the election of Liepaja city as a base of the Navy. This military base - the last, which was founded and built by the Russian Empire.

The history of the military town of Liepaja Karosta has more than a century. The decree on the construction of the fortress, seaport and military camp took the Russian tsar, Alexander III in 1890. Along with the growth and development of the port was created an impressive system of forts along the coast of the Baltic Sea. After the death of Tsar Alexander III, his son, Tsar Nicholas II, manages to name the new military port in honor of his father. In 1919, after the adoption of Latvia's independence, the port of Alexander III changes its name to Karosta, that is now called simply - Military port.

The port of Alexander III was conceived as an independent object, which includes its infrastructure, power plants, sewage system, church, school and post office. It is interesting that the letter sent from Liepaja to Port Alexander III, and vice versa, does not cost a penny 1 as ordinary messages within the city, and 3 pennies, as if it were international origin.

Today, Karosta became interesting tourist places of the city of Liepaja. Former military port preserved monuments of those years. This - the swing bridge, made of steel. It was built in 1906 and still in effect. Far away you can see the amazing beauty of the Orthodox Cathedral of St. Nicholas, built in 1901. And yet there is a military prison, consisting of several 2-3-hetazhnyh buildings of brick red. The first detainees were sailors who participated in the 1905 revolution. Here they were shot. Buried, on the contrary - to fraternal cemetery. In Soviet times, the body used as a guardhouse, later - for the needs of the Army of Latvia. But the past is not taken root, and it was decided to give it all on display for tourists.

The prisons have now become a museum. They are open to tourists. The cells created an atmosphere of those times, like prisoners here: dirty mattresses, metal circles, stools. And administrative compartment you can see portraits of Lenin, the state-owned metal tables, a police convoy in the form of a hanger.

Another interesting object is the Northern forts. These coastal strengthen perform their functions very long. In 1908, they were blown up due to a peace treaty between Russia and Germany. But after six years, these countries will again become mortal enemies. And the destruction of the forts only undermine the position of the country. A few years later cease to exist Tsarist Russia. In the labyrinths of the Northern Fort can also be accessed and wander through them by torchlight.

Who lives in the military town of about 8,000 residents. It can be reached from the center of Liepaja on the bus or minibus.

Liepaja Karosta military camp - a wonderful place, a unique monument not only Latvian, but also the world of history and architecture.
