Valladolid is located not far from the small but charming town of Penafiel, a well-known fact that the territory is an old castle-fortress of the same name. Located on a hill Peñafiel Castle throughout its history has a protective function. The origin of the castle dates back to the 10th century, to the reign of King of Leon Ramiro II. Extant mention of it date back to the year 943. In 983, the castle-fortress was conquered by the vizier Almanzor Cordoba, but in 1008 the Count of Castile Sancho Garcia delivered a fortress from the Muslims. From the 12th to the 16th century castle of Penafiel became an arena for civil wars between members of the dynasty rulers of Castile.

In the middle stands the massive castle tower height of 34 meters, towering over the rest of the building. In the southern part of the building is a unique museum of Spanish wines, founded in the 20th century.
