One of the most outstanding monuments of the city is Guimarães Castle, built in the tenth century. The founder of the castle is considered Mumadona Don Dias, who gave the order to build a castle on top to protect the monastery founded by her from the invasion of Muslims and Normans.

Earlier, on the site of Guimarães it was a small village Vimaranensh. Approximately one hundred years later it became part of the village land, donated by Henry of Burgundy, who bestowed the title of "Earl". Count Henry and his wife chose the village as his residence. By the time the castle was already almost destroyed and needed to be rebuilt. Earl decided to destroy what remains of the castle and expand the boundaries of the castle. The new structure has become more robust in the west and the east gate built. And in 1139, when Portugal became independent, the castle became the official royal residence. After that, the castle was rebuilt several times. Complete construction of various buildings, the walls were strengthened. During the reign of King Miguel Castle some time been used as a political prison.
