Pharoah's Island
Photo: The Island of the Pharaohs

8 km south of Taba is a rocky islet on which in 1115 the Crusaders built a fortress to protect Christian pilgrims walking from Jerusalem to the monastery of St. Catherine. In 1171 the castle was captured by the Arabs, led by the famous Saladinm, but in 1183 moved again to the Crusaders. Gradually, the fortress was destroyed and now there was only one tower and the ruins of the walls. In the evening there are organized sound and light presentation when illuminated castle looks quite impressive against the dark waters of the Gulf of Aqaba.
