Archaeological Museum of Komotini was officially founded in 1962 and based on the archaeological collection, gathered a group of students one of the city schools, where, in fact, ancient artifacts and stored in the years 1937-1962. In 1962, the collection housed in a separate building, but due to the constant replenishment of the treasury of the museum needed an urgent expansion of the exhibition space. In the years 1968-1970 specially for the museum designed by renowned architect Konstadinidisa Apis new building was built, which today is considered one of the most impressive modern buildings of the city.

Unique relics exhibited in the Archaeological Museum were collected throughout Thrace, and cover a vast period of time from the Neolithic up to the Byzantine period, perfectly illustrating the history of the culture of the region and emphasizing the undeniable impact on it of the ancient Greeks. The main exhibition includes finds from prehistoric settlements, Greek colonies, Roman settlements and cemeteries. The exhibition is presented in chronological order and in accordance with the territorial jurisdiction of ancient artifacts.

The Archaeological Museum of Komotini, you can see ceramics and bronzes, sculpture, jewelry, coins, weapons and funerary artifacts and much more. The most valuable item in the collection is certainly a golden bust of the Roman Emperor Septimius Severus (AD 193-211gg).

Since 1987, the Archaeological Museum regularly conducts educational programs for primary and secondary schools.
