Villa Mon Repos

Villa (palace) Mon Repos is located on a hilltop Analipsi south of the modern city of Corfu. The impressive architectural structure is located in a vast green park with centuries-old trees. According to the archaeological site, the villa is located on the site of the ancient city of Corfu.

Villa Mon Repos was built in 1826 by order of the British Commissioner Frederic Adams as a gift for his wife. It is a small but very beautiful palace with colonial architectural elements. Later, Villa Mon Repos was the summer residence of the British governors of Corfu. In 1864, when the Ionian Islands were annexed to Greece, King George I gave Villa the Greek royal family. June 10, 1921 was born here Prince Philip (the Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II). During the Italian occupation of Corfu during the Second World War, the palace became the residence of the Italian Governor of the Ionian Islands.

For several decades between the Greek government and the royal family disputed the ownership of the villa Mon Repos. Former Greek King Constantine insisted on the formal confirmation of its ownership of the villa, as during his reign it housed his private summer residence, and it was received as a gift to the royal family. However, the Greek government considered the palace as the property of the Greek state. Finally, in 2002 the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg has awarded ex-King compensation of £ 7 million (for all the lost property after the abolition of the royal monarchy in 1975) and secured ownership of the villa for the Greek state.

Today, Villa Mon Repos is run by the Municipality of Corfu. Beautiful architectural structure that has preserved its former greatness, and the surrounding shady park annually attracts thousands of tourists. In the building houses a museum that holds treasures raised from the bottom of the Ionian Sea, and the artifacts found during excavations of ancient Corfu.
