Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary (Limerick cathedral) - the current Cathedral Church of Ireland (Anglican Protestant church community) in Limerick. The cathedral is located on an island not far from the Royal Castle and King John's is one of the oldest buildings of Limerick, and also an important historical and architectural monument, harmoniously combines the Romanesque and Gothic styles.

On the lands of what is now the Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary, many centuries ago, was located in the most western outpost of Europe, and the administrative center of the Vikings, and then it built a royal palace. It is on the site of the palace after the king Thomond Domnall Mor Ua Briayn transferred the land as a gift of the Church in 1168 and was based church consecrated in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and who later became the cathedral of the Diocese of Limerick.

A long and turbulent history of Limerick Cathedral made major changes in its architectural appearance. However, experts believe that today there are construction and architectural fragments of the old royal palace, including the door on the western facade, which is likely to be the main entrance to the palace (today, this input is used only for special occasions). The impressive tower of the cathedral, whose height is over 36 meters, was built in the 14th century.

Especially proud of the cathedral are undoubtedly Misericordia (small wooden shelf at the bottom of the jump seat), decorated with carved emblems and presumably dating to the second half of the 15th century. It should also pay attention to the carved from a single block of limestone impressive ancient altar (used for its intended purpose in the era preceding the Reformation) and the authority given to the cathedral in 1624.

By 1968, by order of the Irish government had issued two kinds of postage stamps with the image of St. Mary's Basilica in honor of its 800th anniversary.
