Year 1949 is the foundation of the museum, it was originally called "The Museum Quarter". Located galleries with exhibits in a building in Bjelovar in 1832. Before that, there were offices of the city authorities. It is here that the meeting of two senior people - Emperor Franz Joseph and Bishop Josip Juraj Strossmayer.

Since 1962, the museum is the current name. The total number of items in it reaches 20 thousand.
