Old Orhei in the same city of the Republic of Moldova - a museum-reserve, located on the Cape Pestere in a picturesque rocky valley, 60 km north-east of Chisinau. Reserve museum under the open sky has another name "Moldovan Troy."

In the Old Orhei archaeologists have found traces of several civilizations. Here is the Geto-Dacian defensive fortress (VI-I v. BC), the settlement of the Golden Horde Shehr al-Jadid (the end of the XIV century.), Orthodox monasteries (since XIV century.) And Moldavian town Orhei (XV-XVII cent.).

The local area has been inhabited since ancient times. At the beginning of the XIV century. this area has won the Golden Horde, and then at this point the city was founded, called Shehr-al-Jadid. While Sherh Al-Jadid has been an important transit point for troops during the conquests. In the second half of the 60s. XIV century. the city was destroyed. In the 20-ies. XV century. Here came the Moldovan village of Orhei. In the XV century. the famous ruler of the Principality of Moldavia, Stefan cel Mare ordered to build this place a stone fortress Orhei. In the middle of the XVI century. Local residents moved to a new location - 18 km to the north of the former. After some time, they founded a town called Orhei.

Old Orhei Moldova is the only monument of urban architecture. Archaeological excavations here started in 1947 and is still going on.

Museum-Reserve is a system of natural landscapes and historic sites. The complex includes several steep cliffs, the center of which is a cliff Pestere. Together with another rock - Butuceni, they form a harmonious natural complex.

The oldest fortified construction of the Old Orhei - Gaetic fortress, located on a cliff Butuchenskoy. Another structure, which enjoys great interest among tourists, is a medieval fortress built after the conquest of the Golden Horde of the neighborhood.
