In the western part of the island of Rhodes about 27 km from the capital and 5 km to the southeast from the village Theologos is the famous Valley of the Butterflies (Petaloudes Valley). This area is declared a conservation area and is one of the most famous attractions of the island.

The picturesque valley is literally surrounded by greenery. Lush vegetation, numerous streams, small lakes and beautiful waterfalls create a unique microclimate in the reserve, which is ideal for the breeding of butterflies. Even during the hottest time of year in the valley clean and cool air.

During the summer, millions flock to the valley of the butterflies, hiding all around wonderful living carpet. Here you can see and magnificent butterflies of the family bears. This is a rather rare species found in the locus of amber tree resin which has a characteristic strong odor. In the valley of butterflies spend the final stage of its life cycle. Visitors are strictly prohibited in any way disturb the butterflies.

Beautiful Butterfly Valley - one of the most unique nature reserves not only in Greece, but in Europe as well as one of the most popular places on the island of Rhodes. Every year, from May to September, here comes a huge number of tourists, which, however, are not very good effect on the population of butterflies.

After a long walk through the picturesque valley, and the contemplation of millions of beautiful tiny creatures, you can relax and dine in a small cozy inn, which is located near the entrance to the reserve. There is a small but very interesting Museum of Natural History, where you can learn a lot about Butterfly Valley and its unique ecosystem, as well as a souvenir shop.
