The oldest church in Gorodets is situated in the vicinity of the shaft Gorodetsky, on the Volga River. The first mention of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael church refers to 1304. Here, in the 13-14 centuries was undeveloped tomb of feudal princes. According to legend, in the temple buried son and grandsons of the legendary Prince Alexander Nevsky (Andrei Gorodetsky, Vasily and Mikhail). In 1368, the church burned down by lightning, was built by Prince Boris Konstantinovich and burned again.
Brick church building in old architectural style, survived to this day, was built in 1707-1712 years a little away from the original wooden church. North chapel was built in 1860 in the name of the Sorrowful Mother of God, and two years earlier at the expense of the parishioners was put a stone fence around the church and churchyard.
In 1935, the Church of the Miracle of the Archangel Michael was closed until 1991. For several years, the restoration works were carried out, the final part of which was a new year painted church (chapel of the Archangel Michael) in 2009. Today, church building, for more than three hundred years history has preserved the original appearance appearance, is a historic landmark in the city of Gorodets and architectural monument of federal significance.
