Bagrat Temple, located in the city of Kutaisi on hilltop Ukimerioni is the greatest monument of the architecture and culture of Georgia. The temple was built in X-XI st. during the reign of the first king of united Georgia Bagrat III, after whom is named. Until recently, the cathedral remained only ruins, but now it has been restored.

The construction of this magnificent temple began in the late X Art. and it ended in 1003, after which the cathedral solemnly consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin. Earlier Bagrat temple was a huge palace and temple complex. It is here that marked all of the most important events of those times. In addition to the spiritual destiny temple is a symbol of united Georgia, which has its own explanation: in the XI century. in the Cathedral of the coronation of David the Builder - the king who united the whole of Georgia in one state.

Bagrat Temple to the XVII century. remained intact. It is decorated with rich carvings and mosaics. In the XVII century. severely damaged the roof of the cathedral - it is almost completely demolished.

Bagrat Temple belongs to the best examples of medieval architecture of the Caucasus. Its main features - a refinement, harmonious proportions and elegant decor. The temple has a square shape. The main entrance to the monastery is decorated with an arched portico. Capitals covered with stucco decorations on the walls and floors were decorated with mosaics, some fragments of which can be seen today. Well reviewed and fragments of frescoes of the Holy Virgin in the southern lobby. Inside the temple is no different from the usual church - the altar, icons and candlesticks. As for the ornament and bas-reliefs of the temple, they are very similar to filigree jewelers ancient times.

In 1994, in the city of Kutaisi was founded Renaissance Foundation Bagrat Cathedral. In the same year the church was included in the list of historical and cultural monuments of UNESCO World Heritage. Now the temple is almost completely restored. August 17, 2012 on the church established a 2-hmetrovy bronze cross weighing 300 kg.
