Varlaamo-Khutyn Savior Transfiguration nunnery is located 10 km north of Novgorod. The life of the monastery is closely connected with the name of its founder Varlaam Khutynsky, one of the most venerated saints in the north of Russia. Monastery appeared in the XII century. to "lean spot", are at the mercy of evil forces. The power of prayer Varlaam managed to exorcise evil spirits and build a temple - the Church of the Transfiguration. Unfortunately, the temple was not preserved.
In 1515 on the site of the old temple of the Saviour was built a new Transfiguration Cathedral with five domes. Particularly noteworthy is the western porch of the cathedral with a porch, decorated with tiles. In the cathedral he buried the ashes of the great Russian poet Gavriil Derzhavin and his wife Darya Alexeyevna. Derzhavin died in 1816 at his home in the estate "Zvanka." The coffin with the body of the deceased on a barge on the Volkhov went to his last resting place. During World War II, the monastery was destroyed. Victims and grave of Derzhavin.
