The reserve "Oasi di Alviano", located near the town of Orvieto in Umbria, was set up in 1978, and since 1990 at the initiative of the international conservation organization WWF is under its control. This area, in fact, is an artificial ecosystem that was born after the construction of a dam on the River Tiber in 1963.
Standing waters of the Tiber, which covered a large area after the construction of the dam, soon became a huge number of nesting birds and a haven for a variety of aquatic species. For several years, it was formed mixed natural environment, consisting of lakes, marshes, fresh water and forests. An incredible number of migratory birds annually Oasi di Alviano used as a stopping place during their flight from the north of Europe to Africa and back. In autumn and winter you can easily see coots and wild ducks, and spring is the ideal time to observe the rare migratory birds such as hawks, fishers, wild geese, ibis and cranes.
The vegetation in the reserve is typical of marshland and consists mainly of bamboo and aquatic plant species.
On the territory of the Oasi di Alviano laid two pedestrian route, on which there are information booths and equipped with special cabins for observing wildlife reserve. There is also a pond, created for educational purposes, and a well-equipped laboratory with microscopes for a "deep" dive into the secrets of this unique ecosystem.
Educational trail Sentiero Didattiko stretches for 1, 5 km: it has four huts for bird watching, living in the swamp. One of the huts rises above the muddy place where most of the year going underground and rain water that feed the birds. Another hut allows you to see the birds living in the field.
The second route, walking from the train station to the Oasi Alviano Scalo along Lake Alviano, is also available for cyclists.
