Güssing Castle is located in Burgenland, Austria. The first mention of the castle dates back to the year 1157, making it the oldest castle Güssing in Burgenland and his character.

In 1157 a wooden castle was built by Count Volferom from Styria, who received local land as a gift. However, already in 1242 the King of Bel III confiscated the wooden castle and began its fortifications, turning Güssing in a massive stone building. Together with locks Wieselburg, Sopron and Lockenhaus, Güssing stood guard along the western border of Hungary. While the castle wore another name - «Novum castrum». After the death of Bela III, the castle was handed over to the Order of St. John in 1246. A little less than 30 years later Henry II, together with the descendants of Count Volfera returned to the castle in their possession.

In the summer of 1524 Francis I got the castle and 60 villages under him.

In 1683, under Christoph II, the castle was given as a refuge for local residents fleeing the approaching Turks. Christoph and his son Adam II led the struggle against the Turks.

From 1700, the castle served as an arsenal of weapons for the Imperial. Times have changed, Güssing castle gradually lost its strategic importance. In 1777, all weapons were removed, and the castle began to slowly collapse. When the Empress Maria Theresa, who saw no point in an expensive service, there was a partial destruction of some of the castle fortifications.

In 1870, Prince Philip has created a fund for the preservation of the castle. Currently, all the costs of the castle is divided between the descendants of Philip and the administration of Burgenland. Today the castle is a tourist attraction, here are held theater performances and concerts. The chapel is used for wedding ceremonies.
