Ethnographic Museum was founded in 1910 as the first ethnographic museum in Croatia. Throughout the existence of the museum was held seven permanent exhibitions. In 1910 and 1919 they were presented in different buildings of the local school.
In 1924 the museum moved to the building of the former Town Hall. This is the most beautiful building in the People's Square, was built in the 14th century in the Gothic style. It and now houses an ethnographic museum. The museum exhibition is devoted mainly to the Dalmatia region, especially its arts and crafts, but includes items from other parts of Croatia and neighboring countries.
The museum has collected almost all the typical folk costumes and jewelery of the region both male and female. Traditionally, these costumes are extremely complex and quite unique in design. Rich and varied handicrafts are presented - dishes, knitwear, handmade products - wood carvings, woven baskets, shoes. Here you can find examples of economic activity for nearly two centuries.
The interesting part of the exhibition are presented the interiors of houses Split late 19th - early 20th century. Also, the museum will delight every visitor a fabulous collection of wooden chests with a complex and interesting design.
