Montfort Castle is located in the northeastern part of the city Chaves. Medieval building stands on a hill, on one of the slopes of the beautiful mountains of the Sierra Bruneyro.

Full name of the castle - the castle Montfort Rio de livres. The castle was built to defend the medieval village called Montfort Rio de Livre, hence the name of the castle. There is also another explanation for the name - the castle withstood the floods of the river Tamega, so the castle was added to the name of Rio Livre, which means "independent of the river."

During the war between Portuguese troops and Leon Spanish fortress was destroyed, but later, in 1250, on the orders of the Portuguese king Afonso III, the castle was restored. Construction work on the strengthening of the castle continued as the heir of Afonso III, his son - King Dinis. Four towers were completed, strengthened and expanded the walls. In the days of the Portuguese War of Independence in the XVII century, King João IV ordered to upgrade the lock to the fortress was able to withstand artillery bombardment.

In 1853, the village of Rio de Montfort Livre left residents and the castle was left in ruins. To date, only one survived the watchtower of the four, but lovers of medieval architecture will be interesting to take a walk around the ramparts with stunning views of the valley of the river Tamega.

Since 1950, the castle is included in the list of monuments of national importance. In the 1990s, it was restored and a small archaeological investigation.
