Cathedral, which is the parish church of the city, located about 100 meters from the main square in Karlstad. This cruciform plan church with strong stone walls visible even from the bridge located at point five kilometers to the north.

The very first church Karlstad appeared in the 1300s, but to this day has not reached a detailed description of its appearance, and it is located a little away from its present location on the banks of the river. In 1616 the church burned down, like most other buildings in Karlstad, as a result of the terrible fire that hit the city. Soon, in the same place it was built a new church with a tall spire on the tower. In 1647 she was awarded the status of the cathedral, when Queen Christina made the cathedral city of Karlstad. But in 1719 a second church suffered the same fate as the first - it burned down. Some church utensils have been able to rescue this time, for example, 2 chandeliers of the 17th and beginning of the 18th century.

After the church burned down the second and the third was built in 1723-1730 years on the new together in connection with the increased risk of flooding it at the old place. It was also decided that on a hill fire risk will be minimal.

The new building of the cathedral was built in the style of minimalism and the basis was taken Baroque style. In 1865 Karlstad again suffered a devastating fire. The roof and the tower of the cathedral were destroyed forever. During the restoration works of the building were added some neoclassical features, and the tower was installed new high spire with a built-in clock.
