Ebensee - Austrian town, located in the federal state of Upper Austria, in the region Traunviertel. Ebensee is located in the district of Bad Ischl, at an altitude of 443 m. Above sea level on the southern shore of Lake Traunsee. The regional capital of Linz is 90 km to the north.

Until 1253 the region belonged to the Duchy of Styria Traunviertel until King Ottokar II had not singled him Austrian duchy. Ebensee was first mentioned in 1447. Since 1607 there begins the production of salt. Historically, the site was chosen because of the rich forests, timber which is used for the production of salt. Under the supervision of Hans Woodruff Calcio in Ebensee was to build a pipeline to deliver salt. The pipeline is the oldest in the world, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 1943, the Nazis set up a concentration camp in Ebensee, codenamed "cement" as a subsidiary of the Mauthausen camp. From November 1943 to May 1945 in the camp were killed 8745 prisoners. At the end of April 1945 totaled 18 437 concentration camp prisoners. The camp was liberated by American soldiers May 6, 1945. Due to the extremely high mortality, Ebensee is considered one of the worst Nazi concentration camps.

Currently Ebensee attracts many tourists from around the world. The city is surrounded by three picturesque lakes: Traunsee, offensives, Langbaszee. Traunsee is used for boating, and the other two lakes for swimming in the summer. Also of interest is History Museum Ebensee, about the history of the region in the period from 1918 to 1955. Since 1973, the festival is held here annually noncommercial films.
