The Citadel was built in the island's capital in the XVII century, as a refuge from the constant attacks of the Turks and pirates, but was severely damaged during an earthquake in 1693. The fortress stands on a hilltop with stunning views of the entire island.

Inside the fortress is a baroque cathedral by architect Lorenzo Gafa 'and several museums. The cathedral was the abbey church of the Knights in Gozo here twice held the investiture ceremony of the Grand Masters.

During the construction of the cathedral was not enough money for the dome, but the Italian artist Antonio Manuel painted from the inside so that the flat ceiling creates an overall impression of the dome.

The statue of the Virgin Mary standing on the left at the entrance to the cathedral was brought from Rome. She Stith on a massive pedestal of silver and decorated with a diamond necklace and a gold belt.
