Horta - the only municipality of the same name, and a city in the western part of the island of Faial Azores. In 2011, the population of the municipality was more than 15,000, and the territory - 173 sq.km. 1 In the city of Horta is home to about 7,000 people.

The municipality of Horta was inaugurated in 1467 by the Flemish nobleman José van Horter, who was the first colonists and the governor of the island of Faial. Horta was inaugurated during his second expedition, and the name of the municipality has gone from the name of the aristocrat. It is known that in 1867 the city visited the famous writer Mark Twain, and in 1869 published his book titled "The Innocents Abroad", in which he described the people and culture of Orta. Also in the birthplace of the Portuguese politician Manuel de Arriaga, who later was the first President of the Portuguese Republic.

In Orta has a regional museum, which undeveloped permanent exhibition entitled "Kapelinosh volcano." This exhibition presents photographs in which visitors can see in minute detail the volcanic eruption in the Azores archipelago, which occurred in 1957. Also among the exhibits of the museum has a collection of models of buildings, vehicles and people cut out of the core of fig tree by the master Eklidesh Rosa. For this collection a special room set aside. The museum building is located in the former whaling factory, so among the exhibits, you can also see all that was associated with whaling.
