Among the attractions of the city of Arequipa is not only its beautiful old houses built of hewn stone, but three spectacular bridge, which over a hundred years. The oldest bridge of the city, the bridge Bolognese, also built of ashlar. Its construction began June 11, 1577 by the architect Juan de Aldana and continued until 1608. The total cost of the bridge amounted to 150,000 pesos. His thick arch, crossing a river of Chile, joined the street La Puente Bolognese to the historical center of the Plaza de Armas, entering the beautiful panorama of the modern city.
At the end of the XVII century - beginning of the XVIII century because of the intense earthquake (October 20, 1687 and August 22, 1715) bridge Bolognese had suffered a lot of damage and he needed constant repair, so it allowed workers carried out the repairs of the bridge, build their houses at his foot.
In 1970, Puente bolognese was one of the main ways the center of the modern quarter Yanahuara with heavy traffic, which was a major factor in the physical deterioration of the old bridge. At the end of the 1990s, the local government had a major overhaul in the streets of La Puente Bolognese and repaired the bridge, renewed sewerage and stormwater, updated and expanded highway pavement for pedestrians. There were also works on the restoration of historic facades and street lighting system, which included the participation of students from the school workshop Arequipa.
