Vosskaya church dedicated to Saint Michael, located in the municipality of Voss, Norway, and was built in 1277. It is one of the oldest early Gothic Church of Norway.
Earlier, on the site of the church was a pagan temple. In 1023 King Olav the Holy visited Voss, but then there was the baptism of the area. In memory of this it was erected a huge stone cross is located to the south of the present church building.
This church, the first in the whole commune was first built of wood. In 1271 King Magnus Lawmaker ordered to rebuild it in stone, that was done in 1277. Wooden octagonal bell tower, built in the Middle Ages, is the only building in Norway, made in a similar style. The correct form of logs attached only with an ax instead of a saw. Logs were then fastened with wooden pegs, it is worth noting the strength and reliability of the entire structure.
Because of the Reformation in Norway in 1536 in the church of medieval furniture remains relatively small. The stone altar is preserved from the 1277 - a year of construction of the church. The triptych above the altar dates back to the Coptic art, but in the XVII has been rewritten in the Baroque style. The central part, imitating the great painter Peter Paul Rubens, painted Norwegian Elias Figenshu. Side wing of the triptych are not preserved, but presumably there was depicted Christ in Gethsemane. From the presbytery there is a staircase to the upper tier, where most likely located choruses.
The chair, decorated with images of the Apostles, made in the style of the Renaissance and was probably built after the Reformation. In the years 1696-1698 the ceilings were painted with angels and clouds. The walls of the presbytery were decorated with images of Israeli patriarchs and kings, as well as scenes from the life of Jesus Christ.
Brass chandeliers are made in Holland - one in 1614, another - much later, but certainly no later than 1750. Above the presbytery suspended carved angel wielding font. Previously, when it lowered the sacrament of baptism, but in 1820 it was replaced by the usual stone font.
Stained glass windows were donated to the church in 1923 on the 900th anniversary of the baptism of the entire region of Voss. Then it was built and a new body. In the sacristy of the church kept the King Frederick II - 1589 edition in Danish.
In the years 1875-76 the church was in a pretty poor condition and in need of restoration. The old furniture was replaced, the wooden parts of the building are painted yellow. However, the parishioners did not like a new kind of church, and in the early 20-ies of XX century were started second restoration work will continue until 1953. In the course of these works were restored ceiling murals, chair, partition Phillips and were found ancient murals of the presbytery. Miraculously, the church escaped the bombing during the Second World War, while most of the city was destroyed.
