In 1909, when the County Saki mud baths thanks to the initiative of the doctor S. Nalbandov was founded a museum of history of mud. During the Great Patriotic War almost all the exhibits have been lost, have survived only a few dozen.

In May 1955 by the decision of the local authorities it opened a museum of Salem, which is the first in the Soviet Union "resort" museum operated on a voluntary basis. The founder and first director of the museum A. Kosovo headed it for 40 years. She collected commemorative materials about famous figures of balneology and medicine, talented researchers lake and mud 19-20 Art. - An outstanding surgeon Nikolai Pirogov, academics A.Fersmane, N. The next section of the exhibition is dedicated to mud therapy in the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19 century. A separate section of the exhibition is dedicated to the Great Patriotic War. In 1993, the decision of the executive committee of the city of Saki museum acquired the status of city. In 2009, the museum was returned to its former name.
