White Sea petroglyphs are the archaeological complex, which consists of drawings and vybivok on the rocks in the amount of two thousand. They are located in the town Zalavruga, near the river Vig, which is 12 km from Belomorsk, near the village of Vygostrov. On the north and west side of the White Sea area bounded reservoirs and hydroelectric Vygostrovskoy, the east side is Belomorsk. To get to the place you can walk by following the trail 2 km.

White Sea petroglyphs were discovered in 1926 Karelian writer and ethnographer Alexander Linevsky. This person was a scientist and archaeologist, historian, ethnographer, Russian writer and winner of the State Prize of the Republic of Karelia. Linevsky called it "devils Sledkov" and devoted to this accumulation of more than 10 years of study. The discovery of this ancient archaeological inheritance became the basis for the emergence of especially the popular science-fiction novel of the writer "Sheets of stone book." "Sledkov demons" are the most ancient drawings, made on rocks in Karelia - so say the largest number of researchers.

As is well known, "petroglyphs" translated as "carving on the rock." White Sea petroglyphs is a rich archaeological site, which is located in three main areas: Erpin Pudas, Zalavruga Sledkov and demons. In the figure, you can see a variety of wild animals such as moose, bears, deer; marine life: whale, beluga, seals, as well as people and boats. Besides images of single figures are painted with scenes of the main lessons of ancient man: hunting for bears, deer, elk, various birds and marine animals. In the same place are very ancient image of a man standing on skis, not only in the northern part of Europe, but also worldwide.

In 1936, with the help of a local resident was collected archaeological expedition under the leadership of the leadership of VI Ravdonikas. At the same time managed to find another group of figures, called Zalavruga.

At the centerpiece of the rock are three made a life-size deer, which follow each other, as well as a chain, passing under the feet of them and block the way for the boat people. The figure reflects the hunt for deer in the autumn: the deer crossed the river when they migrate from the north to the south. If you look better, you'll see that the action takes place in the autumn - painted boats on the water, and in winter - used skis. There is also a drawing on the theme of war in the rock depicts the battle with the aliens, sailors who invaded ancient people.

September 5, 1963 opened a new Zalavruga. The opening produced an archaeological expedition led by Yury A. Savvateeva not far from the Old Zalavruga. The site is an area of ​​200 square meters. meters, which was hidden under a layer of earth. Figures have been carefully preserved nature to this day. At this point, it was found more than a thousand images. Zalavruga cleared throughout, and she became a beautiful open-air museum.

New Zalaruga includes 26 groups of figures, which are concentrated in the vast area. Here is a gallery of different petroglyphs, whose existence for a very long time, no one knew. The largest is the scene of hunting elk in the winter on the frozen snow. Most interesting is that only a person plays a central role in the rock paintings.
