Castle in the city of Winchester was built in 1067, immediately after the conquest of England by William. He was part of the defensive system of castles along the coast and around London - a distance of one day's journey from London and from each other.

Unfortunately, our time is preserved only Great Hall, built in the XIII century. Its dimensions are so-called double cube - 110 feet by 55 feet by 55 feet (about 33 5 m x 16 m x 16 8, 8 m). The rest of the construction of the castle were destroyed by order of Cromwell after 1646. Great Hall is open to tourists, from time to time there are concerts and exhibitions. During archaeological excavations near the Great Hall were found the remains of the Round Tower and part of the fortress wall.

In the Great Hall kept "Round Table of King Arthur." Tradition Winchester associated with the name of a legendary king, arguing that it is going to noble knights. The historians, however, did not believe that Arthur was a historical person at all. But that does not stop thousands of tourists come here to look at the Round Table. Studies have annual rings, and radiocarbon analysis dated this table by XIII century, and it was painted in the Henry VIII. Worktop made of English oak, its diameter is 5, 5 meters, weight - 1200 kg. On the edge of the table top are written the names of the knights of the Round Table.

During the Great Hall is the garden of the Queen Eleanor - a copy of a medieval garden, a great place for walking and recreation.
