Castello Eurialo is located 7 km north-west of Syracuse near Belvedere. The road leading to the castle, makes it possible to imagine the scale of defensive fortifications built in the city during the reign of Dionysius the Elder. In addition to the fortifications on the island of Ortygia this talented strategist, I decided to build a wall around the entire settlement, including areas Quiet and Naples, who previously were located at some distance from the center of Syracuse and could easily be exposed to attack.
Between 402 and 397 BCE Dionysius the Elder ordered to erect an impressive 27-kilometer wall, which received its name, on the perimeter of the high plateau Epipoly. Strengthening consisted of two parallel walls constructed from rectangular blocks of limestone, and reached 10 meters high and 3 meters wide. Around the perimeter of the walls at an equal distance from each other have been made secret doors that allow the stream of people passing back and forth without creating congestion and provide an opportunity to observe at any suspicion of assault.
At the highest point of the plateau (120 meters above sea level) rose Euriale Castello, who had an important strategic location. Its name comes from the name of the cape, on which it stands and which resembles its shape nail head ("eurialos" in Greek). This castle - one of the most impressive fortifications built by the Greeks and the extant since antiquity. The center of the fortress is surrounded by three of consecutive ditches, connected maze of underground tunnels, which allowed the garrisons to act independently. For example, using underground tunnels can be quickly removed from the ditch set on fire any object thrown by an enemy, before he cause harm to the whole structure. And if the enemy was still here, he would have immediately been disoriented.
Today the entrance to the castle is located on the site of the first of the pit length of 6 meters and a depth of 4 meters. A little further on is the second deep trench length of about 50 meters, framed by vertical walls, and right behind it - a third the length of 17 meters and a depth of 9 meters. All together is a real Chinese puzzle. Three tall square column with a third ditch suggests that once there was a drawbridge, providing access to the interior of the castle. The eastern side is literally littered with communicating passages, one of which - a length of about 200 meters - leading to the castle gate and gear out of it. And the west side is equipped with a variety of underground rooms in which to store arms and uniforms. Over the moat is a square tower, inside which you can see three square tank. From the far corner of the tower offers a great view of the lying down and the plain of Syracuse.
After the conquest of Sicily by the Romans in 212 BC Castello Euriale used for various purposes, and in the Byzantine period was partially rebuilt.
