Sarakina gorge is located in the southeastern part of the island of Crete. The origins of the gorge near the small village takes MEPI 15-16 km west of Ierapetra. The length of the gorge is 1, 5 kilometers and ends near the coastal village of Myrtos. Sarakina gorge is narrow enough. Its width varies from an average of three to ten meters and only a few seats wider. The height of the rocks framing the gorge is 150 m, which is given its width, looks impressive. In the gorge runs a small mountain river Kriopotamos with clean water. During the year, the water level in the river is changing, and in the winter reaches a peak, making travel through the gorge at this time impossible. According to ancient legend, the giant Sarantapihos (son of Zeus) is stopped at a flowing river to drink water. His long beard slashed in half the mountain and thus formed the gorge. So locals often call it "the valley Sarantapihos."
