Island Mamula presented a small rocky island round, close to the famous resort in the country of Herceg Novi. Once it was called Swallow, until the mid-19th century Austro-Hungarian governor of Dalmatia, general Lazar Mamula, it was not a defensive fortress built to protect the Bay of Kotor on the attack from the sea. Since then the island and there was such a title.
He himself, though not large in size, however, it was of great importance due to its strategic location. The island seemed to be close to the castle entrance to the bay, which was to be used in the course of hostilities. He began to serve as a defensive fort.
And during both (and the 1st and 2nd) world wars the fortress was used as a prison, and the glory of this place was an evil - there is evidence that prisoners champions of free Montenegro, held there, was brutally tortured. The fortress is well preserved to this day and now is under state protection as a cultural monument.
Today the island is famous for its city park, which grows a large number of plants the tropics and subtropics, including several unique varieties of mimosa. In winter, there is carried out the world-famous festival of mimosa, which lasts for a month.
Particularly beautiful view of the bay opens to the side of any swimming by ship. You may notice that all the slopes of the Bay of Kotor cut three tunnels for submarines. Once it was part of the combat power of Yugoslavia. Submarines fell into the tunnels under the water, and the enemy will never know whether they are in or have left the peninsula in the open sea.
To date, all, of course, it looks abandoned and orphaned, although, according to some sources, Montenegro has its own submarine fleet. Boca Kotor also owns shipyards.
Now the island and Fort Mamula organized day trips for tourists, travelers and artists are necessarily stop the passing cruise liners. Everyone who comes here, fascinated by its natural beauty, steep rocky cliffs, while the northern side of the island offers a beautiful secluded beach.
