Church of the Ascension of Christ in Ahtopol is located in the eastern part of the peninsula on which the city is located. It stands on a high seashore, which is on one side goes down almost vertically.
The exact date of construction of the temple is unknown. Presumably, the church was built in 1796, as the date specified in the commemorative inscriptions in Greek in the apse. However, it it is not about the construction of the temple, but rather, about the time when the walls were painted indoors. There is a view that the Church of the Ascension was established on the foundation of another ancient church during the Middle Ages.
The church is a small rectangular building with an apse. The length and width of the temple - 17h7 meters, height - 2, 3 meters. The walls are about one meter thick built of large stones of irregular shape, between which is filled with a fastening solution. In two places at different heights along the perimeter of the building stretch wooden slats - a decorative architectural element. The building is crowned with overhanging eaves and hipped tile roof. In the eastern wall of the church is the apse - semicircular extension, however, it is almost invisible from the street, so the appearance of the church, you can take an ordinary house. Entrance to the temple is located on the south side. Like many other churches built in Bulgaria in the years of Ottoman rule, it is partially - 40-50 cm - dug into the ground. In order to best protect the building, it had been made only two small windows under the roof, facing the western and northern sides.
In apsidnoy the temple preserved frescoes Deesis. It should be noted that the images of saints on the frescoes made by the canons is not Bulgarian, and Byzantine iconographic style.
Church of the Ascension of the Lord - a unique architectural monument not only because of its impressive age. In 1918, as a result of a strong fire Ahtopol almost completely burned. The church on the beach - one of the few buildings which miraculously managed to escape the fire element. Now this temple - perhaps the only evidence features of the architecture that existed in the city before the beginning of the XX century.
