Calheta de Nesquim - an area located along the southern coast of the municipality of Lajes do Pico. Calheta de Nesquim is the smallest area in the municipality (343).
The history of the area begins in the XVI century, when the ship was returning from Brazil and the loaded tree, crashed near the southern coast of the island of Pico. Team survived only three people and a small dog, which led them to a small bay. Dog Nesquim name, and the bay was named Calheta de Nesquim, which translated from Portuguese means "small bay Nesquim." This legend was the basis for the coat of arms of Calheta de Nesquim, which shows a dog, the so-called "pioneer" of a small bay.
