El Ghriba Synagogue - an important Jewish holy. The synagogue is the oldest in Africa and one of the oldest in the world of surviving. Her age - more than two thousand years. If you believe the oral tradition, it was founded by the Jewish priest, who came to this place after the First Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed. According to legend, the El Ghriba synagogue was built on the spot where the stone fell paradise. The legend says that when the last Jew leaves this place, the keys to the gates of the synagogue back to paradise.
On major Jewish holidays, and on 33th day after Easter pilgrims flock here from North Africa and the Middle East. Along the perimeter of a square courtyard Elghriba built small rooms for pilgrims.
In the main hall of the El Ghriba synagogue is the massive door of black wood with metal buckles and studs. Central Hall produces a strong impression to all visitors. The walls and arches are lined with blue tiles. Columns and ceiling painted in blue and white colors. White symbolizes purity walls and blue shutters on the windows - the color of spiritual peace and tranquility. In the main sanctuary of the synagogue is very old and valuable Torah - a significant relic of the place. Pilgrims also come to venerate the tomb of Shimon Bar Yaskhan (one of the authors of the Talmud).
Of course, the building does not come down to us in its original form. Extant building - XIX century. She, in turn, replaced the synagogue of the XVI century.
