In the historic center of the city of Yelabuga is a majestic three-story university building, built in 1903. Author of the project of the institution was Vyatka architect Ivan Apollonovich Charushin.
In 1898, the merchant's wife Yelabuga Glafira Fedorovna Staheeva in memory of the deceased spouse (eminent citizen of the city) allocates funds for the construction of the Diocesan Women's College. When laying the foundations for the first brick of each corner of the building Glafira Feodorovna was laid a gold coin for the long service of educational building. Luck paid off and more than a hundred years of the doors of educational institutions out the best teaching staff of Tatarstan.
Until 1918, the building housed the female diocesan school, which in addition to basic science studies the law of God, etiquette, music and foreign languages. In 1918, the building was called Tatar teachers' seminary, which functioned Russian, votyatskie, Mari and Tatar pedagogical courses. Today Yelabuga State Pedagogical University is a leading regional center of education, science and culture of Russia, collaborating with educational institutions of the USA, Germany, Italy, Spain and other countries.
In September 2003, at the main entrance was a monument to one of the representatives of merchant dynasty, son of the eminent citizen of the town - a writer DI Staheevy. The authors of the monument are the Moscow sculptors VA Demchenko and AV Golovachev. At the opening ceremony of the monument was attended by descendants of the Staheevyh from England, Australia, Singapore and Russia.
