Kapinovski Monastery of St. Nicholas

Kapinovski monastery is located 14 km away from Veliko Tarnovo and 5 km from Velchevo. Cloister is one of the monuments of art culture since 1973. The patron saint of the monastery is Nicholas.

According to the inscription, which had previously existed, instead of the modern cathedral church here it was an ancient temple built in 1272 during the reign of Assen Pacific. Other legends insist that the church was built here back in 1228 when Asen II. When the kingdom of Tarnovo was captured by the Ottoman Empire, the monastery was burned, after which he had long been abandoned.

In the XVII century the monastery was restored neighboring villages. Since the official permission, allows you to restore the monastery, the faithful were not, they were forced to rebuild the monastery complex at night. New buildings especially the Copts and so the building was given "aged" look. Subsequently, the monastery once again expecting the destruction and arson.

Only in the XIX century, resumed the reconstruction of the monastery. Since 1835 the complex has a new collegiate church, which attracts pilgrims today. Continued reconstructions followed in 1865, when brothers Horozovski Kapinovski monastery donated money for the construction of the residential part, made with excellent quality. Later, the brothers became monks.

Since the XIX century Kapinovski monastery transformed into an important religious center, which operates monastery school. The monks of the monastery took an active part in the struggle against the Ottoman yoke.

In the capital's archaeological museum contains a unique find, brought to the museum from the monastery: a triptych-list, which identifies the benefactors of the monastery. Since the XVIII century to the present day to save the remaining gates of the altar and a carved frieze. In the monastery you can also see a variety of unique icons.
