Not so many quiet and secluded corners in Veliky Novgorod. But it is in such a quiet place where the cross of St. Nicholas and the Sign of the street, stands the church of St. Philip the Apostle and St. Nicholas.

Philip the Apostle Church and St. Nicholas - two in one. This two combined temple has four domes - two large and two small cupola. Temples are the same height, but vary in size, have a common base. Filippovskiy temple was erected in the XII century. Initially, it was made of wood, often burned and erected again, and in 1383 it was rebuilt in stone. I build the temple a little longer than wood, and after completion of the work, which ended in the autumn of next year, the temple was consecrated Archbishop Alexy. At the same time, the church of the Apostle Philip's government took a small chapel of St. Nicholas, which belonged to a nearby street.

The current dual view of the church acquired in 1527-1528 g .  Much later, in the 17th century built a bell tower with a tent roof .  Philip Nicholas Church and had a common wall adjacent and parishioners were at everyone .  But things have changed a total disaster - the plague years of 1606-1607, which claimed the lives of many of Novgorod .  City extinct, congregations empty .  Surviving the parishioners decided to unite the two churches in one parish .  In 1607 there is a connection of two parishes, and services are held in churches in succession .  Total elapsed time, the church has repeatedly been subjected to restructuring .  In the 19th century Church of St. Nicholas izvetshala almost completely and had to be disassembled, leaving only the supporting wall, the remains of the foundation .  In Soviet times, the church of the Apostle Philip was the only functioning church Novgorod .  That is why it was decided to restore the old appearance of the double temple: the place was too small, not enough space for all the town's parishioners .  In 1978, while still young, but undoubtedly talented architect-restorer Ninel Kuzmina creates a project for the restoration of such a rare, ancient architecture built for .

This temple is located, revered icon of Panteleimon the Healer, which believers consider miraculous. It is to this icon, Novgorod residents come to pray for the health of their loved ones. About 20 years are the relics of St. Nikita's archbishop, who reigned in Novgorod in the 11th century. According to legend, he saved the city from the prayers of the fires and drought. After the death of the bishop was buried in the Cathedral of St. Sophia, but when the power of the Soviets, and the power recovered in the package delivered to the museum store, where they were left. After a lengthy red tape authorities still gave permission to store this precious artifact for the faithful in the Church of St. Philip. In 1993, the relics of St. Nikita were solemnly transferred to the Cathedral of St. Sofia, and to this day is a cancer on the spot where he was buried.

Nowadays architectural monument restored and presented to us, in the way it was in the 16th century, preserved the west porch and bell tower of the 18th century. This architectural work of having "double" of the church, is a unique structure of Novgorod the Great.
