Sioni (Cathedral of the Assumption) - is one of the most famous architectural structures in Tbilisi's Old City. The first church on the site was built around in the VI Art. At the same time, still it remains a mystery, how to actually looked this ancient temple. According to legend, the first church on the site was built during the reign of King Vakhtang I Gorgasali Iberia.

But the construction of the temple stood for a short time, as we would like. Several centuries later the Arabs destroyed it completely. It was then in Eastern Georgia was established the Islamic state, whose capital was the city of Tbilisi. The Arab invasion continued to 736 by 1122, until such time as the city with a triumphant procession did not enter David IV the Builder - the most famous ruler of Georgia. Freeing Tbilisi from the invaders, the Georgian ruler primarily ordered to restore the ruined temple. At the same time the old building did not restore the church and built a new - very simple and at the same time incredibly majestic building.

At the sorrows of the temple did not stop. In 1236 it was destroyed attacked Georgia Khorezmians. During the peaceful life of the church building was rebuilt again, but it staid only a few centuries until Georgia had not attacked the Shah Ismail. Temple suffered the same sad fate, and in the XVII century. - It destroyed the Shah Abbas. The cathedral was rebuilt again. Once there was a strong earthquake, and then fell to the Aga Khan, Muhammad, and again went to the temple. Despite all this the church began to be rebuilt. In the end, it turned out that modern look Sioni (Cathedral of the Assumption) - the creation of different ages and different people who rebuilt it from the ruins after each failure. The overall construction of the cathedral preserved by Article XI-XII.

Zion is a very modest and discreet appearance. Its architectural style is different from the classic medieval Georgian churches and, most likely, reminds the strict religious buildings in which there are no decorations. The only decoration of the cathedral - the tallest tower, topped by a pointed dome tent, located on the central part of the temple. The main relic of the temple is a grapevine cross, the Christian enlightener of Georgia.
