Old Town Square for a long time is the heart of the city. Mention of the biggest market in this place there since the XI century. The dominant position on the square is the Old Town Hall building complex with a majestic tower, a symbol of the city authorities and the citizens and the Temple of the Virgin Mary with two towers.
In 1338 citizens have received the consent of King John of Luxembourg in the request for the establishment of its magistrates. They immediately bought a house near the town hall and the construction of the majestic towers. Shortly thereafter, there was also a Gothic chapel, which was consecrated in 1381. Gradually, the town hall has grown and occupied several neighboring houses.
The famous Astronomical Clock Old Town Hall, mounted in 1410 Mikulas of Kadan, and improved in 1490 by master Hanuš of late-Rouge with ornamental decorations are one of the main attractions of Prague. Every hour in front of the admiring spectators appear in the upper windows of the moving apostles, and the parade ends ringing skeleton and cock crow. The chimes consist of two parts.
