Tower and walls of the fortress Anakopia - it ruins of the ancient defensive structures (citadel), located in the town of New Athos on the Iberian (Anakopia) mountain. Anakopia fortress was built in the II - IV st., But the main line the walls of the citadel was built in the end of VII Art. with the participation of the Byzantines, who worried the invasion of the Arabs in the territory of Abkhazia.

The total length of Anakopia fortress is 450 m. The city walls thicker than 1 m and a height of up to 5 m were constructed from large smooth limestone blocks. From the south wall of the fortress were strengthened with seven towers. The main gate of the fortress, protected by a circular tower, built of limestone monoliths and three were high enough above the ground. To get to the castle, you can only addl wooden stairs.

Today from Anakopia fortress preserved fragments of walls, fortified towers and arched entrance gate. From the northeast remained level from stone staircase on which defenders were raised on the walls. Inside the citadel, you can see the ruins of two watchtowers. The most important defensive works of the fortress is preserved Roman Tower. This quadrangular tower with loopholes was built around the II-IV Art. n. e. Near the side of the gate is the second tower with small loopholes.

In the central part of Anakopia citadel on a cliff is partly extant Anakopia church built VI - VII Art. The altar area of ​​the monastery survived several stones with symbols of ancient Christianity.

One of the attractions of the fortress, which attracts tourists, is the "inexhaustible" well, which, according to legend, was built even during the construction of the citadel.

Today Anakopia fortress - it is the most well-preserved ancient fortification on the territory of Abkhazia.
