New Athos Monastery - monastery, located in the town of New Athos at the foot of Mount Athos. Athos monastery was founded by the monks of St. Panteleimon Russian monastery in 1875. The construction of the monastery was carried out by the famous architect from St. Petersburg NN Nikonov. Charter of the New Athos Monastery was approved in 1879 by Tsar Alexander II.

The monastery is one of the most magnificent works of Byzantine Revival architecture in the territory of Abkhazia. The monastery complex includes six temples. The most magnificent buildings of the monastery is the cathedral, consecrated in honor of Panteleimon. North-western part of the temple is decorated with 50-meter high bell tower, under which the premises are located refectory frescoed.

The solemn consecration of the high altar of the monastery took place in 1888 to attend the ceremony of Emperor Alexander III presented a gift to the temple of musical chimes, which to this day adorn the tower bell tower. In the place where they met the king and the abbot of the monastery, the chapel was built, and the path along which the Emperor passed from the pier to the temple, the monks called the Imperial alley and obsadili its cypresses.

Athos monastery became a major religious center of the entire Black Sea coast of the Caucasus. Podvorja monastery housed in Novorossiysk, St. Petersburg, Sukhumi, Yeysk, Tuapse, Pitsunda and highland village Pskhu. The monastery worked as a parish school and several factory plants. In addition, the monastery had its own railroad.

In 1924 for "counter-revolutionary propaganda", the monastery was closed. During the Soviet period the monastery for a long time was in ruins after the monastery premises were used as warehouses, tourist resorts, historical museum and a military hospital. Revives the monastery began only in 1994

In 2008, the New Athos Monastery were carried out repair work, and a year later at the main cathedral blazed new dome.
