Fort Gaia is located in the monastery of Lazarus in the city of Macao, on the highest point of the island. It was built in the early 17th century and today is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The fort itself was built in 1622 and its main purpose was to protect the monastery from the Dutch. Since the fort itself was built on the highest point in Macau, it is precisely at this point it was decided to erect a beacon made in the European style. It was the first such lighthouse on the coast of China.
In order to see the castle and surroundings from above, you can climb to the top of the lighthouse on the iron spiral staircase. At a height of 91 meters from the ground level is an observation deck and a lantern, whose light is visible 30 kilometers ships.
Inside the fortress is a small chapel, built in 1622, in which there are survivors from vandals murals and painted ceilings with images of angels. Most of the murals depict Chinese mythological and religious motifs.
The Maritime Museum is located below, you can see the paraffin lamp, one of the first models of that than used before the advent of Chinese electricity.
To reach the fortress is from the flower garden, taking advantage of transport. The road to the mountain passes through the most beautiful places with excellent panoramic mountain views.
