Aqueduct is located near the town of Tomar, which is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal. The construction of the aqueduct was started in the XVI century and finished in the XVII century. The order for the construction of the aqueduct was given to the king of Portugal Philip I, who just at that time was the king of Spain. Aqueduct aqueduct also called the monastery and a monument to the time of the Spanish-Portuguese union, when Portugal and Spain were united in the capture of Philip II of the Portuguese crown.

The aqueduct was built to channel water to the monastery of the Order of Christ, which is located at some distance from this monumental building. Construction began under the direction of architect Felipe third, and finished construction of the architect Pedro Fernandez Torres.

The length of the aqueduct - about 6 kilometers aqueduct consists of 180 arches. The aqueduct water comes from four water sources located outside the city, overcomes the path length of 6 km and flows into the reservoir, which is located at the end of the aqueduct, near the castle. Before the water enters the convent, she went through a purification plant aqueduct.

If you walk along the aqueduct, it can be seen that the height of the arches of the aqueduct is not the same, and the maximum height of the arch - about 30 m. In addition, the aqueduct was not built in a straight line and slightly curved, changing its direction towards the castle. On the one hand the aqueduct is a highway, the other - a dirt, which is also sometimes used by motorists.
