Mazagan Fortress, located in El Jadida near the port - is the main historical attractions. Start of construction of the fortress dates back to 1514 The authors of this stronghold were two brothers - Francisco and Diego de Arruda, also known creation and other fortifications in Morocco.

After the loss of Agadir, in 1541 fortress strengthened with additional fortifications, construction of which is engaged a group of engineers, architects - Joao Ribeira Portugal, Benedetto Ravenna in Italy and Juan Castillo from Spain. Soon, the fortress was built several churches and chapels.

Initially the building had three gates: Bullish - on the west side, Sea - in the north-east and the main gate - from the southern shaft, through which the drawbridge of you could walk in the citadel. In the years of French rule the fortress has undergone some changes - the moat was covered with earth and made a new entrance to the main street Rua da Correira.

After a long two and a half centuries of occupation, the Portuguese, according to the peace treaty drawn up with Mohammed Bin Abdullah, forced to leave the fortress. Before leaving, they mined the main gate, thereby destroying the bastion of the Governor and almost all of the southern shaft, and the city for half a century remained "dead".

Only somewhere in the middle of the nineteenth century. Mullah Sultan Abderrahmane was ordered to restore the destroyed part of the fortifications and build a mosque to return the city to life. That's when the city was given its current name El Jadida.
