The museum about the history and causes of vyat traditional arts and crafts, was established in November 1977 on the basis of the regional museum in the city of Kirov. The museum presents unique exhibits vyat artisans: Dymkovo toys, lace, art processing cap, carving and painting on wood, weaving pine root and everyday objects of the peasants - the artisans of the early twentieth century.

The building occupied by the museum is an architectural monument of federal significance of the 18th century and is considered one of the oldest in the city. A brick building in the provincial baroque style on a high basement, made to the list of public buildings in the city Khlynova (now Kirov) in 1771, was intended for the drinking house and one of the first brick buildings of civil architecture. On the ground floor, which was formerly a wine cellar, today held master classes, and the entire first floor is an exhibition of objects of folk art 18-20 centuries.

Today in the Museum vyat crafts, located in the historic part of the city, in addition to the thematic excursions are held exhibitions of contemporary craft enterprises vyat, lectures on folk crafts other regions of Russia. Next to the museum is another historical attraction Vyatka region - the architectural ensemble of Uspensky Trifonov monastery (17-19 cc.).
